The International AGSE Winter School on Crisis and Disaster Management is organized by the Geomatics Department at the University of Applied Sciences Stuttgart and the Department of Geomatics Engineering of the University of Tehran. It will take place March 11 – 16, 2017 at the Kish International Campus of the University of Tehran on Kish Island, Iran.
THe event takes into account the current state-of-the-art in Geoscience related disciplines such as photogrammetry, remote sensing, and geospatial information with a significant focus on „Crisis and Disaster Management“.
Crisis and Disaster Management
Disaster risk information is spatial in nature and Geoinformation related sciences such as Remote Sensing, GIS and Photogrammetry play a significant role in both data providing and management of disasters and hazards in nature. Rapid population growth and urbanization expansion combined with extreme climatic events are causing a rapid increase in vulnerability of peoples exposed to hazardous events. Natural disasters impose severe damage on almost the entire spectrum of social and natural habitats, ranging from housing and shelter, water, food, health, sanitation, and waste management to information and communication networks, the supply of power and energy, and transportation infrastructure.
Goals and concept of the Winter School
With the focus on „Crisis and Disaster Management“ the winter school aims at contributions of Geoinformatics, Remote Sensing, and Planning to preparation, response, recovery, and mitigation of disasters. The winter school concept includes invited talks by international experts in combination with presentations by participants in the mornings and workshops on topics like the technological breakthroughs of Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) for emergency response.
AGSE 2017 will be the first of two winter school events on Kish Island. It is incorporated into the DAAD supported alumni work of the University of Applied Sciences Stuttgart. Therefore, participants from many countries worldwide are expected to contribute with experiences from their home countries.
The winter school aims at the integration of outcomes of the events into eLearning modules. All interested participants of the winter school are invited to contribute and benefit from eLearning materials such as white papers, lecturing materials or videos, for example, on the worldwide regulations and the developments of UAS and the experiences on autonomous flights, access to hard-to-reach areas and data-gathering tasks that are otherwise unsafe or impossible for humans.

Eligibility criteria for DAAD support:
As with previous AGSE conferences, alumni from developing countries are eligible for funding from DAAD, provided by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
